how many states have no regulation over the retailing of alcohol, i.e. like California?

what I mean is how in California there are no laws stating what hours of the day or what days of the week you can buy alcohol, and there are no laws about what type of retail establishment you buy your wine at. in other words, as long as they have a liquor license, they are free to sell liquor wherever they want…be it liquor store, mini-mart, grocery store, supermarket, wherever…

(the reason is that, in every state I have lived in since California, they have had silly laws restricting when and where I can buy alcohol. First I was in Massachusetts where you can’t get it on Sunday, and they rope it off at the grocery store. But now I live in Pennsylvania, which is totally Medieval in its blue laws! You can’t get any alcohol at the supermarkets. And you can’t get beer in the same place where you get wine and liquor. Any place that serves alcohol has to serve food. Talk about the dark ages!!)

You need to be more up to date, Worldpeace. California is comparatively lenient but not as much as you describe. First, read the answers from Stalkers, constable and answerman. Some localities have additional restrictions. And, as I recall (though I may be wrong) you cannot buy for off-premise consumption at bars in California (like you can buy 6-packs in Pennsylvania), can you?

I believe Nevada is less restrictive.

By the way, I am happy to inform you Massachusetts removed it’s Sunday off-premise licenses sales prohibitions (which by the way affected only localities more than 10 miles from the NH and VT borders) 2 years ago. And alcohol at grocery stores there is only sequestered (1) when the alcohol license is owned and run (and must be cashiered) by an owner other than the grocery store, who leases the space (this is much less common today than it was 30 years ago) and, (2) at licensed warehouse stores like Costco, because Massachusetts prohibits retailers charging membership fees to customers buying off-premise booze; hence the alcohol sales areas of membership warehouse stores must be open for anybody.

And almost all bars in the world are required, as in Pennsylvania, to have food available. But (again as in Pennsylvania) not a requirement that bar customers must eat, although England actually once had such a requirement for getting a drink in the afternoon (before 5PM) but repealed it a few decades ago. Perhaps you meant that PA requires meals be available, not just incidental foods?
